Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Yesterday seemed like an ordinary day for me. I had the day off from school and planned to get a lot done. At around 2 o’clock in the afternoon I sat down at my computer with my tea to check the latest news. The first place I checked was Fox news. I shocked to read the headline. It said "Columbine copycat shooters in Montreal" I thought back to those horrible killings that took place at the Columbine high school in the United States where 13 students were gunned down in cold blood by two deranged teenagers. The thought of something like that happening in Montreal horrified me. I turned on hour local news talk radio station to find out what was going on. It turned out that a lone gunman wearing a trench coat had walked into Dawson Collage and just started randomly shooting people. Fortunately a couple of who were responding to a call saw him walk into the collage and immediately followed him in. It could have been much, much worse than the one dead and twenty injured.
Montreal has been the scene of other school shootings before. Canada’s worst mass shooting took place in Montreal when gunman Marc Lepine, 25, killed 14 women at the Ecole Polytechnic on Dec. 6, 1989, before shooting himself. There was also a case that happened at Concordia university when a disgruntled teacher went in and killed four of his colleagues during school hours.
Fortunately I know no one who goes to Dawson Collage. But others do and with a student population of 10,000 it affects a large part of the population of this area. I listened to many harrowing stories of parents who were desperate to find their children. They were so worried that they might be among those who were fatalities. In listening to their stories I thought about how fragile life is. You could see your loved one off in the morning never knowing that could be their last day on earth. There is no mistaking about it, the devil hates us. He hates all of God’s creation with a passion and he loves it when he can get a hold of a person like the one who did this and try too take out as many promising lives as possible. He loves the destruction people like this man bring and the pain they cause.
Don’t let a day go by without letting those you love know you love them. Pray for them every chance you get. Cherish them while you can because tomorrow they may be gone. We tend to take each other for granted and at many times when a loved one passes from this earth we regret that we didn’t show them the love or give them the time they needed. Parents love your children. Never think of them as a burden. God has given them to you as a blessing. Husbands cherish your wives. Ravish them with your love always. Remember that you are called to love them as Christ loves the church. Wives love your husbands and let them know how much you need them. Don’t nag. Men respond better to love than nagging. Children listen to and respect your parents. Most of them really want what’s best for you. We are never promised tomorrow. Love them while you can.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 1 John 4:11-12 (NKJV)
