There are so many distractions in our western society. So many things that call for our attention. It is so easy to come home after a hard day of work and plop down in front of a television and let it fill our heads with garbage. 95% of the things on T.V. today are not worth watching and yet we give it more time than our God. The television news is run mostly by those with left-wing views who give us a one sided veiw of the news as was just seen in Israel’s battle with Hezbollah. If you watch the news, especially CNN, you’ll see how little they show about the destruction and hardships in Israel. They have started calling the terrorists resistance fighters and people fall for it. They have made Israel look like the enemy. All she did was defend herself against an unprovoked attack.
How can we sit through such garbage, when they and the celebrities laugh and mock Christians and our beliefs.
Lol, I’m getting off topic here. I’ll have to save my ranting for another day.
We have to be careful what ours eyes see and hear. We can have a very unbalanced veiw of life if we are not.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:22-23; The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light. But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you [your conscience] is darkened, how dense is that darkness!
Proverbs tells us that our senses are never satisfied.
Sheol (the place of the dead) and Abaddon (the place of destruction) are never satisfied; so [the lust of] the eyes of man is never satisfied. Proverbs 27:20
Giving in to our lusts and desires results in a heart and mind that is far from God. We become undecerning and lose sight of the things of God. Paul writes in Romans 8:5-9;
5For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit.
Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].
7[That is] because the mind of the flesh [with its carnal thoughts and purposes] is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God’s Law; indeed it cannot.
8So then those who are living the life of the flesh [catering to the appetites and impulses of their carnal nature] cannot please or satisfy God, or be acceptable to Him.
9But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God].
About 3 years ago, I turned off my television. I got rid of the cable. I could no longer see any redeeming value through it. I didn’t throw out the T.V. I kept it to watch dvds and other mediums. If I want to watch a certain show, I download it on the internet, minus all the commercials which are sometimes worse than the shows themselves. I also don’t read any newspapers. I used to receive our local newspaper until I got tired of the Christian bashing that I kept reading in it’s pages.
Using the computer allows me to filter the news that I read. I go to news sites that come from a Christian world view and give a factual account of what’s going on in the world. But even with the internet you have to be careful as it is filled with places that can easily cause you to stumble. It pays to get yourself a good filter to protect yourself and your children if you have any.
The real test of where your mind and heart are is what consumes your thoughts most of the day? Is it your job? Your family? Entertainment? Or are you consumed by God? It doesn’t hurt to examine our hearts everyday. As a matter of fact we have to. If you are consumed by God, you’ll be passionate for all things concerning Him. If your heart and mind are in the right place, it is not a chore but a joy to read His word and spend time with Him. When we do this it is easy to know what His will for your life is. If not you’ll find yourself running in circles.
The word tells us in Phillipians 4:8-9;
8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].
9Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you.
The secret to living in this world is to make sure our hearts and minds are constantly filled with things that glorify God and exalt His name. Because only He is worthy of all your attention.
