The Servant

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. if anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour. John 12:25-26

Many of us are familiar with this verse. But what exactly was Jesus talking about? First of all we have to look at Jesus Himself. What does the scripture say that he did? Philippians 2:7 says that Christ made Himself of no reputation, taking on the form a servant. Jesus said Himself in Matthew 20:28 that He did not come to be served but to serve. Jesus Christ is God incarnate and picture this, the God of all gods, the Majesty of heaven, the Creator came and took on the form of a man to serve His creation. Willingly washing His disciple’’s feet and then allowing Himself to be punished in our place. He freely gave Himself to us even to the point of dying on the cross. He said no there is no greater love than this, than someone lays down his life for his friends. John 15:13 It was the ultimate act of being a servant.

When we come to Christ, we become His bond-servants. In the old testament when a slave gave himself willingly to a household, the master took that slave to the doorpost of his house and drove an awl though the servant’’s ear. The shedding of the servant’’s blood on the doorpost signifies what Christ did for us by shedding His blood. We are saying to Jesus we no longer want to be a slave to sin but His slave. His bond-servant. We bind our selves to Him willingly because of what He did for us. We give up our right to freedom and become His servant for eternity.

Thinking of being a servant sometimes bring up images of a tough master but in the Christians case this is not so. He promises us rest in serving Him. Jesus said "Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."  Matthew 11:28-30

Being a Christian means to serve. It means putting the needs of others ahead of yourself. It means doing the lowliest of tasks without complaint. A true servant will do the jobs that no one else wants. It means doing things for God that no one sees except Him. He is humble and does not boast in the things he does. They follow Christ’’s example as in Philippians 2:5-11 True servant’s of God know that their real reward for service is in Heaven. A crown of righteousness.

I once attended a church with about 800 members where only less than 5 percent were servant’’s. The rest just sat back and wanted to be served. Imagine what that church could have done if all of them were servant’’s like in Acts 2:42-47. They could have turned this city upside down. Will we allow your church to become like that? I pray not. I pray that each of us would find an area of service. Find out what you can do. Your church has many areas in which you can serve. Ask the pastor where you can help. You may be asked to do some tasks that don’’t have any earthly reward, but if you have a servant’s heart you will not grumble or complain. That is the true test of a real servant.

  3. Hi GerryIt\’s funny this is your blog for today. I have designed a program to run at church for single parents. Some christains are given the gift of service, (altho we all are servants no matter our earthly jobs), and we have to be bold and step forward.I saw a need and I long to fill it. I hope it works out.Erika

  4. Hi Gerry. I thought i\’d respond because this post is very similar to the theme in my Bible notes today. They were based on Hebrews 10:19-25 – and very much focussed on the need for Christian communities to support one another. Selwyn hughes was reflecting on people he counsels who wish that their walk in Christ would be as good as other Christians around them. Selwyn believes that many churches "big up" the blessed people and use their fortune as a marketing tool, which creates a false image of Church life. However scripture is quite clear that God doesn\’t always promise to take away our troubles… but he will ALWAYS be with us in the midst of them and enable us to stand. As co-servants we should therefore be willing to bear one another up rather than build a clique or cult around those who The LORD chooses to bless. Otherwise how are we any different from Job\’s comforters (when they spoke)? We should always be seeking ways to turn our blessings back into a format that we can use to bless others.

Greetings in Christ, I wanted to stop by a few sites that I visit now and again to invite you to visit give ear to the writing and music of a Christian brother here in Greensboro, NC, named Edward Waters. He is what some folks might call a Christian singer/songwriter, though he refers to himself as a bard. He is really a writer, a wordsmith, writer who also writes songs and sings. Many of his songs and their lyrics as well as poems and other essay are available to download for free at http://www.backporch.org/edwardwaters. I kind of think of Edward’s work as light hidden under a barrel, not be design, but by circumstances. I would love to see the light shine forth blessing to more people. Since these songs and files are hosted on this site they are available for play on imbedded media players, though credit due would be nice. I hope you will visit Edward’s site and be blessed by his work. Peace. Joel.

  7. Indeed… may I strive to be more and more like Christ and follow His example of being a servant of all… may I never grumble or seek for rewards/compliments when I serve others… 🙂

  8. i certianly pray that my call to sevanthood is fullfilled in the next few months. we are on the edge of our seats anticipating a decision that would put us into full time ministry. currently i am involved in my church in different areas, and i do see the lack of involvement of the congregations always thinking that they are not needed when indeed they are, or they think that they have to wait for an invitation to do something. those who are leaders in their churches have to remember that if you ask you usually get a positive response. for some reason people are sitting back waiting to be called on to do something because they dont know if they are needed or not. so do some calling and see where you get! blessings, and thank you for your message of being a servant.bethany.

  9. HiI agree that all Christians should be involved in some form of service at their local church. One verse in the bible that I like is:Joshua 24:24 it says:And the people said to Joshua, “The LORD our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!”God bless

  10. I try to serve Jesus in the way I treat other people, Christians and non Christians. There are so many ways you can touch a person\’s life and I think that\’s Jesus\’s wish-for us to love one another and show forgiveness. I\’ve attended churches in the past where like Gerry said only a small percentage really practiced what they preached. One example springs to mind at the seniors lodge I worked at. Most of the residents were Christians, but one lady was an athiest. Well they isolated her and some treated her so awfully. I felt bad for her that she didn\’t allow herself to be one with God. What a lonely life. So embraced her even more. How could a Christian treat someone so harshly. She was still a child of God even if she didn\’t acknowledge it. I still think about that woman to this very day.Anyways the point being to serve one another EVEN if we\’re not all alike in beliefs etc. God loves ALL his children.God bless

  11. Off topic, but wanted to share a joke…Las Vegas Casinos and CatholicsThis may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas, but there are more Catholic churches there than casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshipers at Sunday services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed. Since they get chips from so many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to collect the offerings. The churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in…..This is done by the chip monks. Didn\’t see it comin\’ did ya?!?! LOL Cute!

  12. -K-onrad,Thanks for sharing that scripture, (Joshua 24:24). It\’s a powerful verse!Jason

  13. I\’d love to hear your opinion Gerry or anyone elses on what you think of the internet? In this case it\’s being used to send positive messages, but I sometimes wonder if the internet is going to be a major cause to the destruction of people. I\’ve heard so much negativity where it\’s concerned ie. people divorcing, pornography etc. I sometimes wonder if it isn\’t the antichrist? Just curious what everyone thinks. Sorry I\’m straying off topic, thanks 🙂

  14. There was a comment left by a Mike asking why you promote wicca and paganism. And I think that a holy man as he puts it should understand more than his faith alone. There is nothing wrong with one or the other, it’s all in one mans beliefs. And beliefs of others are not something anyone should question. Its not to often I come across a site a conversation for that matter when faith is involved that is not bios and being a wiccan I thank you its nice to see some kind of understanding. Its hard to speak of faith with someone not of yours and only speak.

  15. musacmanYou\’re mistaken. I do not promote wicca or witchcraft. Those links are there to warn people about them. They are very deceptive and lead people away from the truth. The truth being Jesus Christ. He loves you my friend and He says to you to come out of where you are before it\’s too late.
