A Cup of Cold Water

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

41 "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

44 "Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Matthew 25:31-46 (NIV)

A cup of cold water

Given in Jesus name

Can save a life today

It can heal the lame

He gave His life for you

So that you could be set free

Through a cup of cold water

Given in Jesus name

Are you thirsty and dry my friend?

Are you lonely and tired?

Your heart bleeds inside

And you’ve come to your end

I have the answer for you

Just believe and you’ll see

Christ is the answer

Only He sets you free

I wrote that song in 1986. The night before I had gone for the first time into a maximum security prison and witnessed to and spoke to some of the prisoners. My heart bled for them. Many realized how the crimes they committed had affected so many and that they couldn’t go back and change things. They realized they were there because of the consequences of their sins. But many of them had also found Christ and had such joy that it would put many of us believers to shame.

People today are looking for hope and this world offers little. Most of what it has to offer leaves you empty and wanting more. There is nothing that quenches a thirsty soul like Jesus can.

Pastor Paul’s sister inspires me. Here is a woman who has only recently found Christ and has a back so bad that the doctors have told her that she should be in bed and yet as soon as the call went out for help concerning the devastation of Katrina she didn’t hesitate to volunteer. She has been working in a shelter in Baton Rouge taking care of 850 refugees. She is the only nurse for all of those people. Her and her husband have also taken many other refuges into their home. She has been willing to give up her comfort so that others could have hope. Last week at that shelter there was a church service and 90% of the people came to Christ. I believe part the reason was because of her willingness to lay down her life and give up her comfort that many of these people accepted Christ into their lives.

Most Christians are just satisfied to sit in their pews Sunday after Sunday and do nothing. They complain and gripe about how bad things are getting and yet do nothing to help. They leave it to the other 5% percent who actually do something. Could you imagine what it would be like if every believer did what Christ has asked them to do? There would be no stopping the church. Instead we find excuses as to why we can’t help and people are going to hell because we can’t give a couple of hours a week to things like visitation, providing food for the poor or street ministry. No we are too comfortable. Jesus said He would spew the lukewarm out of His mouth but most of us are not even that. We are cold!

Church, the time has come to stand up. We are now closer to Christ’s return than ever before. Find out what you can do. Ask God, ask your pastor. Get busy. There are so many areas that need help I couldn’t possible mention them all here. It’s time for the church to rise up and be all that she is supposed to be and give that cup of cold water today to a dying and thirsty world.

"Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:40 (NKJV)

  1. Amen GerryThere never is not a time to give our all.

  2. Christians are a funny lot, God says build me no place of worship and the first thing you do is build a church, putting power in the hands of men. Man uses this power for his own ends, tainting scriptire and perverting it to their will. Blind faith does not save, we were all given free will and it is up to all of us to excersize that free will. To calim things that you know may not be true, and to say you know the will of the devine is blasfimy in the highest. Did what happened in new orleans happen due to sin? Do you know that for a fact? God loves sinners more than the rest of us for it is they who need gods love the most. God only helps those that help themselves, perhaps they should have just built a better dike and have been better prepared for gods test. who knows? But don\’t judje what you don\’t know. Do not condem people for not acting, we all have our own problems and one must look after ones self before takeing on the rest of the world. For the people who are doing what they can to help I have nothing but admaration and respect, they are not doing the christian thing but rather the right thing. looking into history the christian thing and the right thing unfortunatly offten do not match. Also why must you threten the retun of christ to motivate peoples actions, the church offten rules through fear. The wold is changing and if the lord does come to walk again will you see him? like the jews saw him? (nothing agenst the jews) I\’m just saying that you may just look over the lord because he may say things you don\’t want to hear, and keep to your man made church so you don\’t have to hear the words of god come to earth again. Stop trying to interpret 2000 year old storries, the meanings have been lost long ago, close your eyes open your heart and listen to god. God loves us and takes care of us all, just because you don\’t get what you want from him does not mean you don\’t get what you need, it is knowing when god is speaking that is the trick.Feel free to contact me, I seek understanding not confrentation but I am more than willing to listen to anything anyone has to sayMikeAC101@hotmail.com

  3. Gerry Thank you for your words. I am slowly getting out of the habit of using silly things as an excuse not to do something when God is telling me to do it. This really hits close to home for me, thank you.Blessings,Bethany.

  4. MikeAC1101First understand that the Church is not a building. The church is made up of believer\’s from all over the world. It doesn\’t matter where we meet. We could meet in a theatre, a gymnasium, or a park and that would be the church. The church is not manmade, it was ordained by Christ. He said that wherever 2 or 3 of us gathered together He was there in there midst of it.Do I believe without a doubt the Christ’s way is the only way? Absolutely 100%. Do I believe that God’s hand was in what happened to New Orleans? Yes 100% You can call me narrowminded, bigoted or stupid it doesn’t bother me. It’s not man that I have to answer to but God. It’s interesting to note what happened in many of the places that have been destroyed by Katrina which by the way means holy and pure. In one town the only 2 buildings destroyed were owned by drug dealers. All the casinos were destroyed. People who had never gotten help before and lived in areas of complete poverty and were ruled by drug lords now have freedom. Thousands are turning to Christ. Not only that, they are now amazed at how low the death toll actually is. Was God in it? Definitely! The bible says that we are all sinners. Everyone of us deserve to die. But Christ took that punishment for us. But salvation only comes to those who seek it. Otherwise the bible says that they are under the wrath of God. Romans 1:18 Yes God loves them but unless there is repentance there is judgement. Does God want people to go to Hell? Does He take pleasure in punishing people for their sins? No! That’s why He provided a way of escape through Christ. It is not me who condemns but Christ and it is also Him who justifies. A pastor is called to bring the word of God and to bring correction where it is necessary. Don’t believe me, read 1st and 2nd Timothy and see what the role of and elder or pastor is. The return of Christ is not a threat, but a promise. But you are probably right many churches would probably miss His coming, but not so those that are doing what He asked them to do. The bible is not a book of stories. It is life. There is no book from ancient times that is as reliable as the bible. I used to think that it was a book of nice stories until I actually came to know Christ. The moment I asked Him into my life that book became alive. It is not called the living word for nothing. It brings life. It brings hope, love, joy and peace.Mike you seem like a real nice guy. Please understand that unless you know Him (Christ) a lot of what I am saying to you may sound like nonsense. I used to think so too. Like Noah before the flood I am trying to let the people know that it’s time to get in the boat. I am not saying God is going to flood the world again. He promised not to. All I am saying is that almost all the signs that the bible talks about Christ’s return are in place. More so than ever before. God doesn’t want that a single person perishes. For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life. John 3:16Please feel free to write back

You will get people who don\’t agree or want to challenge you, but Christ never promised this life to be an easy one. In face, we are to consider it PURE JOY when we face trials of many kinds, when our faith is tested and when we feel "uncomfortable" because it shows God is working in and through us. I really enjoyed your space…feel free to stop by mine anytime and keep up the encouragement! In Him,Michelle
