Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over it. In this way, they disobeyed the LORD by burning before him a different kind of fire than he had commanded. So fire blazed forth from the LORD’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD. Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD meant when he said, `I will show myself holy among those who are near me. I will be glorified before all the people.’ " And Aaron was silent. Leviticus 10:1-3
Nadab and Abihu were sons of Aaron. They had been anointed as priests by God and had accompanied Moses partway up Mount Sinai and had seen God. In an act of disobedience they took fire from another source other than God’s alter and for this reason, God consumed them. They had been taught by their father all they needed to know to be a priest. They knew the correct way of offering incense, so what caused them to do this? It is not told us. Perhaps it was pride, drunkenness, or just plain stupidity we don’t know. It could be that because they were sons of the high priest that they thought they were immune to God’s punishment. Basically, they had mocked God’s holiness with their presumption and that was their sin.
Today so many in the body of Christ want to be in positions of leadership. They want to involved in one of the glamour ministries such as being a pastor, teacher, prophet, evangelist, apostle, worship leader, singer, etc. Many don’t understand the cost that is involved with being in one of these positions. They want the prestige. When a person is called to one of these positions they are called to a separated life, a holy life. God always confirms your calling through 2 or 3 witnesses. To presume that you are called without that is a dangerous thing. James 1:3 says "Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged by God with greater strictness." Christians in these potions are held to a greater accountability as they are the leaders and can cause many to stumble if they fall. To presume that God won’t punish you for sin if you are in a position such as these, is sure to bring strong judgement. A number years ago there was a well known televangelist that preached holiness. One day it was discovered that he had been meeting with a prostitute at a motel. His ministry came crashing down very quickly. He later confessed that he believed he was immune and presumed that God would not judge him. He was offering up strange fire in his meetings. Many fell away because of his sin. You can not be in a position of leadership without a holy walk. To presume otherwise will bring you to nothing but destruction.
