Worship is changing. The Holy Spirit is birthing a worship that fully concentrates upon our Saviour. The Spirit’s purpose is to reveal Jesus to us. He is also our comforter and our helper. We can not worship God the way He deserves to be worshiped without the Spirit’s help and guidance. Our worship has to allow the Him to do through us what needs to be done and sometimes we may be led to do things that may offend the religious amongst us. I don’t mean barking like dogs or snorting like pigs or other barnyard animals. I don’t see that anywhere in the scripture. Whatever the Holy Spirit leads us to do it will always glorify God and always within the bounds of the Word of God.
David was a worshiper. He wanted nothing more than to please God and he didn’t care if he offended as long as he knew he was pleasing Him. In 2 Samuel chapter 6 we see David stripping down to a linen ephod which was a priestly garment and bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. As he went ahead of the ark, the Bible says he was leaping and whirling all in his excitement of worshiping God. It goes on to say that his wife Michel saw this and despised him for it. She said in verse 20, "How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!" I love David’s response in verse 21 and 22, "It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor."
Because of what Christ did for us, we who have accepted Him as our Saviour have been appointed kings and priests and like David, the priestly king, we are to bring an offering to our God. That offering is pure praise and worship. Worship not caught in the bounds of religion, but birthed from a heart that is pure and that doesn’t care what others think about their worship. All we need to know is that we are being led by the Holy Spirit and it is a pleasing sweet aroma to our God. There are those who will be offended by it. But you see, the maidservants are those who worship with us. Those who are part of the pure spotless bride of Christ, the servant’s of the Most High God. They are us. In our worship led by the Spirit, we will find that not only will God honor us, but that we will honor each other.
