Redeeming the Time

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:15-17

Our lives on this world are so short. The Bible says in Isaiah 40:6b-8; "All flesh is grass, and the loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of the Lord blows upon it. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever."

Some people’s lives are shooting stars and they leave their mark upon this world while others are more just a barely heard whimper. Their whole lives are spent trying to accumulate things. Like the rich fool Jesus spoke about in Luke 12:16-21;

And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

    "Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."

    "But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

    "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

You can’t take anything with you when you die, especially if you don’’t know Christ as your Saviour. Time is so short and we will all be judged one day as to how we have used it. Every moment we waste in trying to build our own little kingdom is a moment we will never get back again. It is gone for eternity.

There was a secular musician called Steve Millar who wrote a song that said Time keeps slipping into the future. We promise ourselves that we will make a decision to follow after Christ or to spend more time with Him and His word. We make promises to spend more time with our spouses or children and before we know it our chances have slipped away from us and it is too late. Our families fall apart and we wonder why.

Jesus said in Matthew 16:24-26; "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?"

We are foolish beings and our hearts will always find ways for us to squander the time we have. The only way to use time wisely is letting someone else teach us how. That happens first by coming to Jesus and confessing you are a sinner. Then recognizing Him as your Lord and Saviour. Ask Him to show you how to use your time best. He will direct you through the Holy Spirit and His Word

    Greetings Brother,Am writing from Greensboro NC. Am a pastor here – of church where Steadman attends – "The Christian Guy Next Door." Keep up the good work. Canada needs it! Our denominaiton has a growing Canadian Presbytery – very strong conservative evangelical group. My wife is Canadian – from Toronto. Am sending three daughters to Ontario Pioneer Camp for the summer as staff and counselors. Will drive up and back 3-4 times. Check out http://spaces.msn.com/members/joelblog and http://spaces.msn.com/members/deardisciple. Limks always welcome. Joel. Feel free to e-mail.

  4. i am a friend of Earl Leard, if you\’ve heard of him, who\’s a retired minister[he called m a philosipher].Anyways, i\’d just like to comment that while much wisdom lies in the bible[i\’ve read it] there is also much foolishness. There are laws that serve to limmit happiness and strenghten a central authority, namely the church, which has time and time again lead people astray.Also, i plan to make the most of my life. I compose classical and jazz and play the sax. However i intend to become leader of the NDP and improve this country.

  5. You mentioned the church has led people astray. It is religion that leads people astray. There have been many who have come in the guise of Christianity who were not Christians. A Christian is a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ. They live a relationship with Jesus Christ will never lead people astray but only to the truth.The Bible does seem like foolish to those who are perishing. But to us it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. There is more joy in serving Jesus Christ than anything this world could ever imagine.Nick you can try and live your life to the fullest, but when it comes to facing God it won\’t mean a thing. What counts where will you spend eternity.

  6. Thank you for this blog. It really captured what I was struggling with today. Our walk with Christ on earth is not easy, God knows this and he lets us know we are not alone. May God richly bless your ministry. You are a light in this dark world.

  9. One of the things that makes Canada such a wonderful place on Gods earth, is its lack of religious overtones. It is a place where religion is a quiet, personal journey. A place where all religion, is praised, understood and embraced, By those with faith and those whose life is just as peaceful and meaningful without
